Your Visit
A careful and thorough retinal exam can be time consuming. Please prepare to be in our office for up to 2 hours. During the initial visit, we will ask you questions about your eyes as well as your health, in general. Both of your eyes will be dilated for the exam. We strongly urge patients to bring a driver as pupil dilation can make driving difficult.
Upon your arrival you will be asked to fill out a patient questionnaire. If you are a returning patient, we will be asking you to update our records with any changes in address, phone number, or insurance coverage. This is important as we strive to keep our files current. You will also be asked to provide us with your insurance ID cards, as we keep copies of these as part of your chart.
Once you are checked in, one of our ophthalmic technicians will do a preliminary eye exam and assess your vision. They will check your eye pressure and put drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils. After your eyes dilate you will be examined by one of our physicians. He will use several bright lights to evaluate your macula, vitreous and peripheral retina. Following the exam additional testing or treatments may be recommended. Follow up exams may be necessary to evaluate treatment or changes in your condition.
